An innovative, spacious, and accessible lavatory for airplanes
Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) faces difficulties using the onboard lavatory due to its restricted space.
Current aircraft lavatories, even those in wide-body aircraft labeled as accessible, are too confined for PRMs to enter with their caregivers and a wheelchair. As a result, individuals requiring total assistance have struggled to use the lavatory during flights. They are often compelled to use diapers in their seats or refrain from using the toilet throughout the flight. Due to limited cabin space, it has not been possible to create an onboard accessible lavatory as spacious as those on the ground.
JAXA proposes the concept of a spacious onboard accessible lavatory by making efficient use of cabin space
JAXA has developed a new concept for an onboard accessible lavatory in cooperation with JAMCO CORPORATION. This proposed concept consists of two adjacent lavatory units and a connecting cross-aisle. When PRMs need to use the lavatory, the partitions separating the units are removed, creating a spacious environment that can accommodate two caregivers and an onboard wheelchair. In other words, a practical onboard accessible lavatory, similar to those on the ground, will be provided for PRMs requiring total assistance. Additionally, this lavatory is designed to be easily used not only by wheelchair users but also by passengers with ostomies and those traveling with children.
