Develop technology to remove large space debris and improve the space environment. Achieving a sustainable space

Space debris continues to grow

Space junk is man-made objects that are not in use orbiting the Earth, such as rockets and satellites that have completed their roles, or objects that have separated from these. If space debris collides with a satellite, parts may malfunction and the satellite may lose its functionality, or the parts that make up the satellite may break and break into fragments, generating new space debris.
In particular, collisions between large debris can generate thousands of new debris, and it is predicted that the current orbital environment can be maintained by removing several large debris annually.

Maintain a safe space environment by removing large space debris!

JAXA aims to transfer the near-approach operation technology that it has cultivated in the space station cargo transfer vehicle "Kounotori" to the private sector, and to create new markets in cooperation with private businesses that aim to commercialize countermeasures against space debris. We will contribute to securing the international competitiveness of our country.

  • ・We will improve close proximity operation technology and develop civilian engineers.
・We will raise awareness of the issue of space debris and awareness and awareness of space environment conservation.
  • ・We aim to promote a new industry by building a commercial-based debris removal system.
・We aim to make it a sustainable activity by promoting commercial debris removal and establishing it as a social infrastructure.
  • ・We will maintain a prosperous and convenient society by fostering sustainable space activities.
・Preserve the space environment by preventing the generation of new space debris.
  • ・We will contribute to human society by disseminating JAXA's technology and experience.
