Expanding the scope of human activity by developing a gateway to the Moon and Mars.

The internationally developed Gateway lunar-orbit space station

Gateway shall serve as a base for excursions to the Moon and to Mars. Proposed and initiated by the US and developed largely by a team recruited from space agencies participating in the international space station (ISS), Gateway is anticipated to provide up to a 30-day stay for a crew of four astronauts. Canada, Japan, and Europe have announced their participation.

A short-term residence and transport supply station for astronauts.

JAXA shall support project planning by leveraging technologies developed through our Konotori cargo transports and our ISS and manned-space-flight activities. In particular, we shall provide environment control and life-support systems for astronauts staying at the facility; and transport food, clothing, and other materials needed to maintain life, as well as tools and materials for extra-vehicular activities and investigations on the lunar surface. In general, we will support planning by using technologies where Japan is strong—such as in the supply of lithium ion batteries, already successfully deployed in terrestrial flight applications and on the ISS.

  • By supplying batteries, environment control, and life-support systems for Gateway, we contribute to creating a strong basis for technological innovation and the future of industry.
  • We are contributing to an international cooperative framework toward peaceful and stable space research and use, through government support related to the Artemis program, and through our participation, with space agencies from other countries, in the International Space Exploration Coordination Group (ISECG).
