Use telescopes, radar, and other instruments to monitor space debris and prevent collisions with satellites.

Space Debris Threatens Our Way of Life

As human activities in space proliferate, the number of satellites and the amount of space debris continually increase—greatly elevating the risk of collisions of objects in low Earth orbit.
Weather satellites, TV satellites, and GPS satellites are among the many satellites that have become intrinsic to modern lifestyles. To allow for continued use of this part of space, it is essential to track and manage the huge amount of space junk that is also orbiting in this area.

Observe the Debris; Avoid the Dangers

JAXA observes space debris using telescopes, radar, and other tools; calculate trajectories; and carries out various types of analysis. When we detect situations where debris is getting too close to a satellite, we take steps such as alerting the satellite operator and calculating the best way to avoid a collision.

  • By tracking and assessing space debris, we support research in various industrial sectors worldwide and contribute to improving the relevant technologies.
  • ・Maintaining a prosperous, functional society by protecting satellites from space debris.
・Helping to protect the environment of low-orbit space by reducing the generation of even more space debris.
